yes but if you canned it doesn't taste like anything canned onion would just smell
if you want to cry a little less you have to cut the onion in half and then wash it with cold water.
also the trim and knife wash it with cold water.... the smell doesn't stay as much. try it to believe
And in fact cutting it under water does not make the onion tear
