In most Migros stores, you can now also bring your clean reusable tableware to the staffed cheese and meat counters and have your favorite products packed directly in it. Migros offers various items for open sale in many stores. The cooperatives are also constantly examining whether it is feasible and ecologically sensible to expand open sales. For example, the open sale of rice and pulses is currently being tested in a Migros store in Geneva. However, initial evaluations in this case have shown that too much food is currently still being wasted and food waste is therefore being promoted. However, we are definitely staying on top of this issue.
On the subject of glass instead of plastic, we could say the following: glass is made from sand and lime and is easy to recycle. However, a lot of energy is needed to produce and recycle glass - especially for melting it down. This energy, in turn, requires crude oil. In addition, glass bottles, for example, are many times heavier than plastic bottles. In addition to the higher material consumption, this also has ecological disadvantages during transportation, as more fuel is used than for lightweight plastic bottles. From an ecological point of view, this means that the environmental impact of plastic bottles is usually much lower than that of glass bottles due to the significantly lower material consumption.

Hello @oblx, thank you for your question. Migros is constantly working to reduce or eliminate plastic from its packaging. We will remove plastic from many products by the end of 2019. We use up to 80% recycled PET for these trays in the fruit and vegetable department. This means we save on new material. You can rest assured that Migros is making great efforts to continuously optimize packaging and reduce packaging material. However, the first priority is always to adequately protect the product.
