Mothers are unique people. They give a lot and need little to blossom: a few kind words, a small gift and beautiful flowers from time to time. Logical. After all, "stupid" comes from Dame, while "marvelous"... oh, let's not go there!

Side note: dämlich comes from the Low or Middle German "dämelen", which means "to be not quite in one's senses" and probably goes back to "taumeln" (to stagger, to be uncertain).
Dame, on the other hand, comes from the Latin "domina", which means mistress.
Nevertheless, I try to remove "stupid" from my vocabulary because of the obvious similarity - you don't want to explain to everyone first that, from an etymological point of view, there is no connection to lady...

This word, attested since the 18th century, belongs to the verb dämelen "to be not quite in one's right mind", attested since the 16th century. Related is - damisch, which corresponds to the older, now lost dämisch, and also in the language area temetum "intoxicating drink", temulentus "intoxicated", tām "illness, death" and tomitʼ "torment, oppress".
