Dear M-Infoline,
I regularly consume the product Zucritam from Migros. I have recently noticed that Zucritam consists mainly of aspartame. I am a little worried because I have read that aspartame causes cancer. Do you know if the product is safe? Do you know of a study that has tested the product and guarantees its safety?
I would be very grateful for any feedback or literature references.

The safest thing is still to listen to your body. Maybe take an "aspartame break" and watch your body to see what happens. Then take aspartame again for a few days and see what happens. Possibly document symptoms, emotional states or similar in writing ;)

Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener that is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. Due to its intense sweetening power, the quantities required are so small that aspartame can be regarded as a practically calorie-free sweetener. The additives currently approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) are harmless to health. They are among the best-studied substances in our food and are only approved once strict toxicological tests have proven their harmlessness. As long as the authorities consider aspartame to be safe, there is no valid reason to do without this sweetener
The WHO sets so-called ADI values (Acceptable Daily Intake) for food additives (including sweeteners); these are based on all available studies. In addition, the amount determined to be harmless is divided by a safety factor (usually 100). From this, the WHO defines the amount of a substance per kilogram of body weight that a person may consume per day and over their entire lifetime without even the slightest risk of any adverse health effects.
For aspartame, this is 40mg per kg of body weight per day, which is equivalent to the sweetening power of 560g of sugar (or 156 Zucritam tablets) for an adult weighing 70 kg. With a "normal" consumption of aspartame, this figure can hardly be exceeded.
However, even occasionally exceeding these daily amounts is not a cause for concern, especially as the safety factor of 100 is also included. No sweetener has harmful effects when consumed in normal quantities.
