When I want to buy organic apples, there is often only the Gala variety (especially for storage apples). This surprises me, as Gala apples are susceptible to mildew. Although no synthetic chemical pesticides may be used in organic farming, biological agents against mildew still have to be sprayed. Wouldn't it be better to use mildew-resistant varieties?

Thank you for your quick reply. I shop in the Zurich region. But it seems to be a general problem. The topic came up during a project week in which we had contact with producers. Several of my colleagues were already experiencing this when shopping and one producer is growing more Gala because it is required by the wholesalers.
I agree, organic apples are very often Gala apples, i.e. the ones on sale. Really not a good organic apple variety and yet so widespread. Supply often determines demand.

Hello Hahneburger, at the Migros Cooperative Zurich we always stock several organic apple varieties where possible. Gala apples are still very popular with customers, which is why they are usually on offer. We stock fall apples such as Gravensteiner, Cox Orange, etc. Then come various organic apple varieties, which we also sell under an extra item number for seasonal apples.
