As we have been hearing in the press for some months now, there will be or are a lot of apples on the market. As the harvest was record-breaking, there is a lot of produce on the market.
So why is the apple price for all varieties only around 30 to 40 centimes below last year's meagre harvest?
At the moment, 500g are available for 1 Fr. A few weeks ago, the Gala variety was already available for 1.95 per kg, which means that it was cheaper back then.
In Germany, there are currently a lot of apples available at very low prices. Aldi Süd, for example, is offering Bräburn for just 69 cents. Edeka has Gut und Günstig apples on offer for only 50 cents per kg.
The farmer has all varieties for about 1 franc per kg... and he still makes money.
Why isn't the apple price massively cheaper?

First of all, your comparison with Germany.
Basically, we have higher prices for various reasons. Simply because of the small-scale structures and the higher cost of living (high wage level), we generally have a much higher price level in Switzerland than abroad.
The selling prices of apples are always determined according to the current market situation. Availability (e.g. due to weather conditions), origin (domestic/import), demand and the quality of the products therefore have the main influence on purchase prices and, accordingly, on sales prices. The supply/demand ratios for the relevant qualities are determined and communicated on a weekly basis, and a reduction of 30-40 cents in the selling price amounts to 10%, depending on the variety and season.
In contrast to your example of buying directly from the farmer, we incur additional costs, such as logistics to the stores, professional storage, possibly differing quality requirements and quality controls.
We always endeavor to offer our customers the best price/performance ratio.
