At first I thought I wasn’t seeing right—I shop a lot at Migros (about CHF 150–200 a month) and then I get a gift like this.

In this case, I have to give Migros a bit of a "pass"—despite my usual sharp criticism of its management. Margins in retail aren’t very high, and 200 francs in monthly sales is on the lower end. Ultimately, when it comes to birthday gifts, it’s the thought that counts, not the value. I would have been happy to receive the seal-shaped ice cream, while at the same time thinking about how transparent this attempt at customer loyalty really is. But it fits the picture that Migros management is now projecting.

I think getting ice cream for your birthday is a nice gesture. But for an adult, it should come in a cone.
For anyone wondering what you need to do to get Migros to wish you a happy birthday: You probably have to verify your date of birth in your account profile, which is exactly what I just did.
Belated happy birthday! But personally, I think it’s a bit out of line to make fun of a kind gesture...

Given how friendly the email was, I was expecting something like a double Cumulus voucher or something similar. That’s why I found it funny. I guess I’ll have to adjust my expectations 😊
